Medallion’s Technology

Magnetic REEs in permanent magnets for electric drives are critical to the electrification of transport and to satisfy surging demand for electronic devices in an increasingly digital world.

Incumbent REE processing technologies are outdated and don’t conform with acceptable ESG standards - that’s where we come in.

Medallion’s Technology

We have two core technologies that offer significant advantages.

·      a “separation” technology that delivers high recovery of high purity rare earth oxides from mixed mineral concentrates derived from multiple feedstocks.

·      a “cracking” process for monazite, a widely available rare earth mineral feedstock that is a byproduct of heavy mineral sand operations.

Our separation technology is ligand-assisted displacement (LAD) chromatography, originally developed with our partners at Purdue University. We have an exclusive license with the Purdue Research Foundation to separate rare earth elements and other minerals from all raw material feedstocks, excluding coal sources and excluding recycled materials from manufacturing wastes and recyclates from battery and magnet sources.

We use LAD chromatography to ensure the effective separation of metals along a standard chromatography column.  This technology offers significant advantages with respect to traditional separation methods.

What’s different about our technology?

Ligand-Assisted Displacement (LAD) Chromatography

It is easy to scale, transferable to other REE oxide mixtures, and adaptable to changes in feedstock composition. It also has a smaller footprint, highly efficient and cost competitive with a superior working capital profile as there is no locked inventory of extractant and metals.

A key additional feature to this technology is that there are no organic solvents, delivering an improved environmental impact.

We see it as a platform technology for the separation of rare earth oxides and other critical materials.

A platform that can be tailored to each project’s needs thanks to our advanced computer-aided engineering (CAE) approach.
